Lesson 3 of the GOGA Academy concept series. Stops and targets are where a plan is actually tested. This lesson explains reward-to-risk, why accuracy matters less than you think, and how stop and target distances can be tested on historical candles instead of picked by feel.

Stops are the plan, not the failure

A stop-loss is a pre-set exit if price moves against you. A take-profit is a pre-set exit if price reaches your target. Placing both before you enter removes the hardest decision — the emotional one — from the middle of the trade.

A trade without a stop is a bet with an open end.

What R:R means

R:R compares what you risk to what you aim to gain:

if your stop risks $100 and your target is $300, the trade is 3:1 (reward-to-risk)

The ratio is decided at entry, by the levels you choose — not by hope afterwards.

Why R:R matters more than accuracy

Win rate alone tells you nothing. What matters is the combination of win rate and average reward-to-risk:

Win rate needed to break evenAt this R:R
50%1:1
~40%1.5:1
~33%2:1
~25%3:1

A trader with a 30% win rate at 3:1 can be solidly profitable; a trader with a 60% win rate at 1:1 is roughly flat before costs. Fees and slippage raise the win rate you actually need — another reason thin edges die.

The practical lesson: you do not need to be right often. You need to risk little when wrong and let winners run when right.

Setting SL/TP with data, not guesses

Levels picked "by feel" are the weak point of most plans. GOGA tests stop and target distances on historical candles — a parameter sweep shows which SL/TP combinations survived realistic conditions across many windows, instead of looking good on one lucky chart. As with any backtest, the result is a historical observation, not a guarantee.

Dónde probarlo. Take the free Academy module on stops and trailing, then run an SL/TP sweep on a strategy and read how the gate treats the result before it reaches paper. The full curriculum is in the GOGA Academy; the method behind the sweeps is in Cómo Analiza GOGA las Estrategias de Cripto.
