A trade is an exchange of a security for cash or another security, executed on a trading platform or exchange. It occurs when compatible buying and selling interest results in an execution. The execution establishes the transaction’s price and quantity and is followed by clearing and settlement, through which the parties’ obligations are processed and the securities and payment are transferred. A trade may be part of long-term portfolio activity or an active strategy, but the term itself describ

Trades are the transactions through which securities change hands in financial markets. A participant generally submits an order through a broker or other market intermediary, and the order is routed to an appropriate trading venue. If its terms are compatible with available interest on the other side of the market, an execution can occur. Trading should not be confused with a guaranteed way to earn a return. A trade merely establishes an exchange at an executed price. The security’s price may subsequently rise or fall, and active strategies can create additional costs or cause a participant to miss later market movements. Understanding the difference between placing an order, receiving an execution, and completing settlement helps explain what a trade actually involves.

What Trade means

In this context, a security can be exchanged for cash or for another security. The essential event is execution: buying and selling interest meets through the market’s trading mechanism and produces an agreed transaction. A trade is narrower than an investment strategy. A long-term investor may trade occasionally to establish or adjust holdings, while an active participant may make trades more frequently in an attempt to respond to short-term price movements. FINRA describes market timing as one such active strategy, involving shifts into or out of markets or between investments based on anticipated price changes. That strategy is not part of the definition of every trade. Execution also differs from settlement. Execution records the transaction’s terms. Clearing and settlement follow, processing the obligations and ultimately transferring the relevant securities and funds. Therefore, a trade can be executed before the final transfer is completed.

仕組み

A simplified trade commonly follows these stages: 1. An order is submitted. The order identifies whether the participant wants to buy or sell, the security, the quantity, and any applicable price condition. 2. The order reaches a trading venue. In an electronic limit-order market, it can interact with orders already available in the order book. 3. Compatible orders are matched. NYU’s description of trading mechanisms explains that a trade occurs when an incoming order can match an existing order under the market’s pricing rules. 4. The trade is executed. The execution records a price and quantity. An order may be filled completely, filled only in part, or remain unexecuted, depending on available matching interest and its conditions. 5. Clearing and settlement follow. These processes calculate and complete the resulting delivery and payment obligations. A limit order states an acceptable price boundary. A buy limit sets the highest acceptable price, while a sell limit sets the lowest acceptable price. This provides price control, but it does not guarantee execution because suitable opposing interest may never become available.

Practical example

Suppose Alex submits a limit order to buy 200 shares of fictional BlueWave Technologies at no more than $45 per share. An existing compatible order offers 200 shares at $45. The trading mechanism matches the orders, producing a trade for 200 shares at $45 each, or $9,000 before any applicable transaction costs. The execution establishes the price and quantity. The subsequent clearing and settlement process handles the transfer of the shares and cash. If no seller were available at $45 or less, Alex’s limit order would not execute at a higher price. It could instead remain open or expire according to its order instructions. This example demonstrates execution mechanics only; it does not imply that BlueWave’s price will increase or that the transaction will be profitable.

Risks and limitations

A trade exposes the participant to uncertainty and possible loss. After execution, the security’s market price may move unfavorably. The executed price also does not guarantee that another trade can later be completed at the same or a better price. Limit orders carry nonexecution risk: the market may never reach the specified price, or insufficient matching quantity may be available. More active trading can also increase transaction costs and fees. FINRA warns that market-timing strategies may miss important market gains when a participant exits during a decline and does not participate in a subsequent recovery. Market conditions can affect price formation and orderliness. The IMF’s market discussion notes that supply and demand contribute to price discovery while complex instruments and periods of stress can impair market stability. These considerations make a trade an uncertain transaction, not a promise of liquidity, favorable pricing, or profit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an order and a trade?

An order is an instruction or expression of interest to buy or sell. A trade occurs only when that interest is executed against compatible interest on the other side of the market. An order can remain unfilled or be only partially filled.

Does a limit order guarantee a trade?

No. A limit order controls the acceptable price boundary, but it executes only when compatible opposing interest is available under the venue’s matching rules.

Is execution the same as settlement?

No. Execution establishes the transaction’s price and quantity. Clearing and settlement occur afterward to process obligations and transfer the securities and payment.

Is every trade a short-term strategy?

No. A trade is the exchange itself. It can be used by a long-term investor, an active trader, or another market participant. Market timing is one active strategy, not the definition of all trading.

Does completing a trade guarantee a profit?

No. A trade only completes an exchange at an executed price. Future prices are uncertain, transaction costs may apply, and the position can lose value.
